Ambassador William B. Milam, a respected U.S. diplomat and advocate for democracy and human rights, has passed away peacefully, according to a statement shared by former colleague Jon F. Danilowicz.

In a heartfelt message posted on social media on February 18, Danilowicz expressed deep sorrow over the loss of his friend and mentor. He said Milam had lived long enough to witness the restoration of democracy in Bangladesh, a country he held close to his heart.

Danilowicz recalled working with Milam in both Bangladesh and Pakistan during his diplomatic career and later in the nonprofit human rights organization Milam founded after retirement. He described the late ambassador as more than a professional superior, calling him “a friend, a mentor and a father figure.”

“One of the great pleasures of my life was accompanying Bill on his long-awaited return visit to Bangladesh a year ago,” Danilowicz wrote, thanking those who helped make the visit successful.

Milam was widely respected for his commitment to promoting democracy and freedom. Danilowicz said that the organization “Right to Freedom” would continue the important work Milam began, ensuring that his legacy endures.

Further details about Ambassador Milam’s life and contributions are expected to be shared in the coming days.

Tributes continue to pour in as colleagues, friends, and members of the human rights community remember a diplomat whose career was marked by dedication to democratic values.

“Farewell and Rest in Peace, Ambassador,” Danilowicz concluded.
